Articles & Laws in Playing the Golf
On display in: Golf in the 18th Century
What is it?: Hand-written rules of golf, which appear on the first page of the very first minute book of the Society of St Andrews Golfers.
The first Rules of Golf were written by the Gentlemen Golfers of Edinburgh in 1744. They were established for an annual competition, in which golfers competed for a silver club. The competition was adopted by the Society of St Andrews Golfers ten years later and they followed almost exactly the Rules of the Edinburgh Golfers. Although there were only thirteen Rules, they form the basis of the Rules used today.
